Blancpain was named after its founder Jehan-Jacques Blancpain (pronounced blon pa' - ) who first registered as a watchmaker in Villeret, Switzerland in 1735. The original dive watch came with several specifications direct from the French combat swimmers including a locking timing bezel, so that dive times don't overextend; an auto-winding mechanism; and a leak warning system courtesy of a dot on the dial that would turn red if moisture was present which went on to become something of an iconic feature of the brand's watches.
