The History of Breguet

The history of this model is really interesting and quite paramount to this watch. The modern Type XX and XXI designs are based on the original military specification. Both watches use movements originally developed by Lemania (which was bought by Breguet in 1992) and both are "retour-en-vol," or flyback chronographs. This feature was especially useful for dead reckoning aerial navigation, as it allows a pilot to precisely measure flight time between landmarks or changes in heading.

Specifications

Now for the more technical part, let's take a closer look at the specs of this incredible piece of history. The case is 15.2mm-thick and has a very acceptable lug-to-lug distance of just over 48mm. The case is water-resistant to 100 meters, so there is no worries should you want to wear this watch every day or around the pool or ocean. The dial is covered with domed sapphire crystal, which of course is scratch resistant so you know your watch is protected from general wear and tear. The legibility of the dial is absolutely fantastic, the prominent hands and hour markers make for brilliant readability. The previous Breguet Type XXI 3810 did not have a display case back, a real shame for those that love to see the movement like me. Luckily this Type XXI 3815 does, which is great because we love being able to see every last beautiful detail of the watch.

The Dial

This modern classic needed to have a stand out dial and I definitely think the Type XXI 3815 meets this. Around the dial is a bi-directional ratcheting rotating bezel which feels really vintage in style. This timepiece features a central seconds and minutes chronograph. To put it simply, this means there are central hands to count both the chronograph seconds and minutes (up to 60). The 12-hour chronograph subdial has been removed, and at 3 o'clock on the dial is a synchronized 24-hour hand that functions as an AM/PM indicator. The in-house Breguet movement also features the date via a window at 6 o'clock.

The Movement

Housed inside this beautiful watch is the Calibre 824Q/A automatic chronograph movement with flyback function, which is also equipped with Breguet's most up to date silicon balance spring alongside other innovations common in other Breguet models. The final result is a watch with 48 hour power reserve with good anti magnetic properties, ideal for aviation.

Overall, we think this watch is the best of both worlds, with the state of the art movements and complications, but universally vintage feel and design.
