Doctor Who Through Space and Time: The Watches of Doctor Who

Kicking off the weekend, the Doctor was back exploring the galaxy with his latest companion, Ruby Sunday. Doctor Who is a show all sci-fi/fantasy fans adore. With a quick-witted MMC and a down to earth side kick to keep the Doctor on the straight and narrow, each episode is a new adventure of unimaginable magnitude.  

While the main apparatus of the Doctor is his Sonic Screwdriver, he can often be seen with another tool, a watch. From a vintage pocket watch to a sleek wristwatch, I discuss some of the incredible pieces throughout the history of the show and how you can get the look! 

The Doctor

Dr Who was first aired in 1963 by the BBC as a fun, sci-fi show that can be loved by both adults and children alike. Because there's nothing worse than spending your Saturday watching bad cartoons. 

For those who haven't had the pleasure of being terrified by the Weeping Angels, the Doctor is a mysterious 2000-year-old time traveller. Exploring the world through time and space in their spaceship known as TARDIS, the Doctor is joined by a loyal companion from Earth to share his adventures with.  

The Watches of Doctor Who

With over 40 years of adventures and 15 regenerations, Dr Who has seen some incredible sights, including magnificent timepieces. Below, I have found a few of the most memorable timepieces from the series and similar watches that you can use for a similar look.  

3rd Doctor & Globa Sports Watch

Globa Sport was first founded in the 1860’s as an affordable alternative to some of the more high-end brands.  

Worn by the 3rd Doctor, played by Jon Pertwee in 1970, the Globa Sport Watch was the TARDIS homing device. Used to locate the mischievous spaceship, the Globa Sport watch was also the actor's personal watch.  

A vintage manual chronograph with a rich TARDIS blue dial and brown leather strap. This watch became an icon for the series and is now one of the most precious Dr Who pieces of memorabilia.

11th Doctor & Buler Nivarox

Gracing our screens in 2010 as the 11th Doctor, Matt Smith is a legendary actor. Taking over from the iconic David Tenant, Smith had rather large shoes to fill. And he did an amazing job with the help of his companion, Amy Pond (Karen Gillan).  

Throughout his time as the Doctor, Smith could be seen wearing a gorgeous timepiece. After some sleuthing, I concluded that it was a vintage Buler Nivarox model, however, there is also speculation that is may be Haste De Luxe. 

The domed glass is encased in a gorgeous gold case with a matching gold bracelet. The Vacheron Constantin Fiftysix Self Winding provides a similar look with enlarged numbers and a gold case.  

7th Doctor & FOB Watch

The 7th regeneration of the Doctor, played by Sylvester McCoy, became known for the FOB Watch. A digital pocket watch that, when used with a Chameleon Arch can transform the Doctor into a different species entirely.  

In reality, the pocket watch used a simple classic design with the innerworkings of Casio Twin Graph II. The intricate design on the case made this a collector's piece, with many finding dupes online.

9th Doctor & Raymond Weil

After a long 16-year hiatus, Doctor Who made his return. Christopher Eccleston brought the Doctor back to our screens and while being one of the most notable Doctors, his wristwear is what we are actually interested in.  

There is much speculation over the watch worn by the 9th Doctor; what brand is it? Is Eccleston's own watch? What does it do? 

Ultimately, all we know is that it is a silver rectangular face watch with Roma numerals, a black leather strap, and a flat wide crown. A rather common piece in the early 2000’s.  

The Raymond Weil Toccata is a gorgeous alternative. A slim stainless steel, rectangular case encases a white dial with roman numeral hour markers and date display. Complete with a sleek black leather strap.  

For over 60 years, the Doctor has taken on some unforgettable adventures in the TARDIS. Exploring every inch of space and time, Doctor Who is a much loved series and I love diving into the details of the timepieces worn over the years. From a digital pocket watch to the class of a rectangular chronograph, the liberated style of each Doctor is a marvel.
