Brand In Focus: Glashtte Original

GlashtteOriginal began in 1845. Ferdinand Adolph Lange dreamed of creating an independent watchmaking industry and deemed Glashtte, a small mining town,the perfect location. Following a loan from the Saxon government, this lead to the founding of the first ever watch company. It was an immediate success. Some of the finest watchmakers in the world were drawn to the town and set up shop. The resulting timepieces were of such exceptional quality that demand quickly grew.Such was the success ofGlashtte-made timepieces that other brands began falsely labelling their pieces as being fromGlashtte. To counteract this, timepieces from the town began to be labelled as GlashtteOriginal'.And so, the name stuck. 

During World War II, the town of Glashtte suffered huge damage following bombings, which was a massive blow to the town's watchmaking industry. Craftsmen no longer had access to outside supplies of springs, jewels, or machinery, so they had to learn how to be completely self-sufficient, a trait which they still exhibit today. AllGlashtteOriginal timepieces are manufactured completely in-house. 

The brand has been creating ranges of quality timepieces for men and women for decades. Glashutte prioritise practicality and durability with a view to everyday use. When the watch industry was struck by the quartz crisis,Glashtterefused to cave and focused its attention entirely on the new technology, unlike some other brands at the time. They offered some real innovation, creating the first quartz-powered marine chronometers. 

Swatch Group acquired Glashutte Original in 2000 and the brand became globally recognised as fine watchmakers. AllGlashttetimepieces are still made under one roof and entirely in-house, proving the brand's dedication to honouring its roots and heritage.
