IWC Big Pilot 43

Today we have a review of the latest version of an IWC legend with us, the new Big Pilot 43. If you know anything about IWC you will be familiar with the iconic Big Pilot. The Big Pilot watch was infamous with pilots, and over the years IWC have kept the traditional look and feel of the original from the 1930's, the perfect harmony between classic and modern design.

Here's a little bit of history behind IWC. In 1868 Boston watchmaker Florentine Ariosto founded International Watch Co' in Schaffhausen, far from the watchmaking centres of Switzerland. The plan was to combine advanced American production technologies with skilled craftsmanship, which Swiss watchmakers were famous for. IWC then established its reputation with their first movement, the eponymous Jones Calibre. 150 years later they are one of the biggest and well respected watch brands in the world with ambassadors from the legendary formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton to Hollywood stars like Bradly Cooper.

Now that we have touched on the history, let's get more into the specs of this iconic timepiece. The original Big Pilot traditionally measures at 46mm, which is still widely available, but for those with a smaller wrist, this new size at 43mm is perfect on the wrist. A new feature with this Big Pilot 43mm is the quick release strap which is ideal if you want to change straps to a rubber or calf leather. They haven't stopped there with the upgrades either, IWC have upgraded the water resistance of this model from 60 meters to an is an incredible 100 meters, rest assured you can take your beloved Big Pilot to the beach or the pool.  

The dial on a Big Pilot is what, to me, makes it a Big Pilot. There are not many watches on the market that are as instantly recognisable as the Big Pilot. With its onion crown and easy to read large icon dial, it's a great go-to style for when you're heading out. It really is a classic piece that can be dressed up or down. It boasts sapphire crystal class which is super durable, so you do not need to worry about scratches and scuffs when wearing all day.  

Beating at the heart of this model is the IWC manufactured 82100 calibre movement. This movement allows a power reserve of an astonishing 60 hours with a frequency of 28800.0 vph (4.0hz). With over 192 components that can be viewed through this stunning new exhibition case back, IWC are really showing their unbelievable skill and craftsmanship here. IWC offer a 2 years manufacturer's warranty with this model which is a true statement to the quality and craftmanship of this watch.
