When it comes to luxury watch icons, there are a couple that instantly spring to mind; one being the legendary IWC Portugieser and a particular model that stands out for a variety of different reasons. Today, we are taking a deeper dive into IWC Portugieser model IW500705.
When looking at the watches face, there is something that is oddly satisfying to the eye. It could be thanks to the polished, blued and hand applied Arabic numerals and index markers that gently float on top of the beautiful silvery white dial; or perhaps it could be the slender and timeless feuille hands that provide excellent readability; perhaps the colour matched silver sub-dials that peer back at you with their circular texture and pattern, with small seconds on the left and the power reserve indicator on the right. This power reserve indicator offers a lovely red touch and brings a dash of warmth into the cold white-blue picture.
Featured at the bottom of the dial is the date window, beautifully clear and visible. This seems to be a recurring theme with this model; it is complex but at the same time, simple and easy to read. To add to this, IWC have crafted the display glass from sapphire crystal and added an anti-reflective coating on either side.

This model's case size comes in at a generous 42.3mm, yet despite being a little larger it does not lose any of its classy or elegant look and sits wonderfully over a shift cuff. It does come in slightly thicker than the previous update at 14.5mm but this really is not an issue when you consider that this model has a whopping 7-day power reserve. On the note of this power reserve, let's look at the back and the underlying beauty of this model.
Beating at the heart of this IWC Portugieser IW500705 is the Calibre 52010 automatic movement. And well let's just take a moment to appreciate how gorgeous this is. This movements looks are truly merited and it packs a punch with a huge 168-hour power reserve or, as it is displayed on the face“ 7 days. It is composed of 257 parts, 31 jewels and is quite frankly incredible. IWC never cease to amaze with their movements, the art of watchmaking has never been so prominent.
Our final thoughts on this model, well it's quite simple“ IWC have made an incredible complicated movement and have managed to fit it into a slender and sleek frame. It is easy to read, durable and sits wonderfully on the wrist no matter what it is worn with; it is simply a perfect all-rounder.
