OMEGA Speedmaster Moonwatch - The New Generation
- 8 Jan 2021
We may only be in January, but OMEGA has already made one of the biggest watchmaking announcements of 2021. This year, the Speedmaster Moonwatch collection is being updated with its next generation models. For watch lovers everywhere, this is a chance to see the latest edition of the much love and classic timepiece“ with unique additions to its design and the powerful Master Chronometer Calibre 3861.
TheLegacy
When OMEGA first introduced the Speedmaster in 1957, a robust and waterproof chronograph that was easy to read, use and be exceedingly precise; however, they did not expect this creation would change the history of the brand forever and become part of history itself.
In March 1965, the OMEGA Speedmaster 3rd generation was declared Flight Qualified for all Manned Space Missions, following intense examinations including thermal, shock, vibration, and vacuum tests amongst other by NASA. Just weeks later, the Speedmaster first entered space on the wrists of Virgil Gus Grissom and John Young during the Gemini 3 mission; and then again when Edward White became the first American to walk in Space, with an OMEGA Speedmaster 105.003 strapped to his wrist by a special strap.
A 4th generation update in 1965, brought subtle changes to the chronograph's design and became the style that is known today amongst watcher lovers as the original Moonwatch. Fast forward four years; and the year of the first moon landing, when the OMEGA Speedmaster ventured into space again and was the first watch to be worn on the moon.
Since then, the OMEGA Speedmaster has been worn by the crews on all six lunar landings in history, making this a truly iconic model.
The LegacyContinues
Loved on Earth and beyond, the Speedmaster Moonwatch collection is truly iconic in the world of watchmaking. This year marks a chapter in an already exciting history for the brand. President and CEO of OMEGA, Raynald Aeschlimann, said, When updating a sacred timepiece like the Speedmaster Moonwatch, every detail must be true to its original spirit. This chronograph is recognised the world over, so we've approached its design with the most sincere respect, while taking its movement to the next level.
In the most recent update, inspiration has been taken from its own historical design, 4th generation Speedmaster Moonwatch, commonly referenced as the ST 105.012 and famously known as the first watch that was worn on the moon.
These new models features space-era tributes, including the classic asymmetrical case, the step dial, the double bevel caseback, and the famous dot over 90 (DON) and a diagonal to 70 on the anodised aluminium bezel ring. The most significant update comes with the arrival of the Co-Axial Master Calibre 3861. The new movement ensures that the Moonwatch will now be unaffected by even the most extreme magnetic fields reaching 15,000 gauss. In addition, the entire watch can be certified as a Master Chronometer“ the highest standard of precision, performance, and magnetic-resistance in the Swiss watch industry.
A CrewOf Four
Four eye-catching models made from steel are available in the Speedmaster Moonwatch Master Chronometer collection. Choose from either hesalite glass models, with a choice of a nylon fabric strap or a full-brushed stainless steel bracelet, or sapphire crystal models with a choice of a leather strap or stainless-steel bracelet with polished and brushed links.
As an official stockist of OEMGA, here at Chisholm Hunter we are more than happy to assist with any questions you may have about any of these new models or any others from our OMEGA ranges.
