Today we bring a review of an exciting new model that many watch lovers far and wide will know about, one of IWC's most iconic models; the Portugieser Chronograph.
The heritage of IWC is deeply rooted in American pioneering spirit and entrepreneurship. Florentine Ariosto Jones, a watchmaker from Boston, founds the International Watch Company in 1868.
The IWC Portugieser was introduced in 1939 and its origin dates to the 1930s, when two Portuguese businessmen operating in the watch industry visited the IWC headquarters, then known as the International Watch Company'. They proposed the development of a large stainless-steel wristwatch which housed a movement that could match the precision of a marine chronometer. Now the only way of getting this perfect readability and the highest precision in those days was though a pocket watch. Fast forward three years and the first Portugieser wristwatch was released.
On first inspection of this new green dial model, it is clear to see why this timepiece has become a global icon. With a compact case diameter of 41 millimetres, this fits perfectly on almost any wrist. The case is crafted from full stainless steel and features sapphire crystal glass on both sides with anti-reflective coating, so you will not miss out on any of the other spectacular details on the dial or movement.
This particular model features a striking green dial which plays incredibly well with the light and is sure to catch the eye of watch lovers from around the globe. On closer inspection of the dial, we can see that the Portugieser sports Chronograph functions for seconds and minutes, and not to forget, a printed quarter second scale on the rim which allows precise reading of the stop time, but also pays homage to the Portugieser's origins as a nautical precision instrument for the wrist.
Moving past the visibly appearance and incredible functionality; it's time we dive into the heart of this automatic watch icon. Beating on the underside, lies the Calibre 69355 movement and well there are no words. This automatic self-winding movement boasts a staggering 46 hours of power reserve, with 194 components and 27 jewels; a timepiece that stands out from the rest thanks to its striking looks, full character and wonderful history behind it.
In summary, the IWC Portugieser lives up to the legend it is but it is much more than that; it is the kind of watch that is passed down through the generations, the kind of watch that never gets old or outdated and the kind of watch that is truly made to stand the test of time.
