Watch Review: OMEGA Speedmaster Dark Side Of The Moon

Alinghi were the first European team to win the Americas cup with victories in 2003 and 2007 and have won numerous competitions incuding seven D35 trophies. To celebrate this unique sailing collaboration and as a special tribute to the ALINGHI boats that fly across the water, OMEGA has chosen the Speedmaster as the perfect watch to celebrate this incredible partnership. This one-of-a-kind iconic model displays some truly captivating details, inspired by ALINGHI's unique boat design. 

The first striking feature of the OMEAG Speedmasted, Dark Side of the Moon is the remarkable black chronograph dial with prominent red features set off dramatically against the contemporary black ceramic 44.25mm case. The stunning dial features laser ablation and black carbon pattern inspired by the material used for the catamaran ALINGHI TF35 hull and reveals glimpses of the inner movement through a blackened skeletonised dial. At 3 o'clock, a 4 minute or 5- minute tactical time display has been included in red, helping with precision on the water. The 6 o'clock sub-dial features a sandblasted and anodized aluminium disc, with the ALINGHI logo transferred in red which rotates creating an eye-catching display when the chronograph function is used. Represented by red for passion, and black for technology, the team's logo is inspired by two boats churning the seas before a match race. The alternate minute track reveals transferred red dots, while the hour markers and hour / minute hands are blackened and diamond polished. Even the screws have been blackened to match the ALINGHI logo theme. The attention to detail here is quite remarkable creating a truly extraordinary timepiece, delighting with new discoveries at every turn. 

Perhaps the most impressive feature is revealed on the reverse of the watch where the sapphire crystal exhibition window reveals the uniquely decorated OMEGA Calibre 1865, with stunning display of eighteen jewels and exquisite laser ablated and carbon contrasting design textures. Providing a power reserve of 48 hours, with a frequency of 21,000 VpH, the impressive manual-winding movement is not only outstanding in design and craftsmanship but it is also ideal for life at high speed due to its lighter and thinner design. The superb detailing is reminiscent of ALINGHI's sleek catamaran craftsmanship, continuing the sharp detailing, using laser ablation, the main-plate and barrel bridge have been given a crisp honeycomb effect, similar to the interior of the ALINGHI TF35 hull, continuing the truly inspired design. 

This 44.25 mm model is expertly crafted from black zirconium oxide ceramic with a prominent ALINGHI logo featured in red varnish on the ceramic stop/start pusher, perfectly matches the chronograph hands on the dial, which are either varnished red or white. The tachymeter scale is treated with Super-LumiNova, for superb visibility in dark conditions. Protected by domed scratch resistant sapphire crystal with antireflective crystal on both sides and Water resistant to 50 meters, with regatta timing allowing for easy reading of the critical regatta time intervals at a glance.
